Dubbed as the "Haligi ng Tahanan", but their sacrifices are often hidden in the background.

This is because our society is built on the notion that the Father provides for the household, while the Mother takes care of the family.

I would like to think, that this belief probably stems from the scenario that when a child is born, the mother is the first person the child meets. Imprinting that closeness to the Mother rather than the Father.

Obviously, this will change when the child grows up as they will build their own favorite parent.

As a typical Filipino household, my father was the one working and my mother was taking care of us. However, due to economic changes, and his company went belly-up, my mother also have her little side-hustles to make ends meet. When my  Ate and Kuya started working, they also helped keeping us afloat. A very typical setup for a low-income family.

What I'm saying is, after all that segway. In a "harmonious" family, the roles of parents are equal and often shared.

Just because the Father does not do much of the childrearing, it does not lessen his role to his family. Same goes for the Mother, just because she is focused on taking care of the family, and not helping much with the household income, it does not lessen her part.

That's why we have a special day set for our father and mother. We celebrate both their roles in building a family.

Closing Thoughts

Happy Father's Day!
